Area 3 - Progressivism and Anti-Imperialism

The process of expansion and colonization was not without its detractors. Though popular across most of the United States, a sizable minority of the American population was staunchly anti-imperialist. These writers and politicians expressed their outrage at America's imperial ventures through newspapers, pamphlets, political cartoons, and public speeches and rallies. While having little effect on long-term American policy, the anti-imperialists were quite successful in bringing to the fore of American society the debate on the economic, social, and political ramifications of imperialism.
